Dr. Richard Barrett

Beaverton Dentist, DMD, FAGD

A native Oregonian, Dr. Richard Barrett was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. From birth, Dr. Barrett was surrounded by dentistry. Both of his parents are dental hygienists; his mother still in practice in a career that has spanned nearly five decades. Two of his uncles have worked in dentistry as well, one as a dental specialist and the other as a dental laboratory technician. The oldest of four siblings, Dr. Barrett was followed into dentistry by his sister Georgie, a hygienist, and his brother Stephen, a dentist. It could be said that dentistry is in his genes.

Dr. Barrett completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in 2007. While there, he also discovered his love for research and served as a laboratory technical working in the Institute of Molecular Biology. From there, he moved onto the Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry where he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree in 2012. Continuing his research efforts while at OHSU, Dr. Barrett helped develop a new method for classifying lymph nodes of the head and neck and authored a paper on the subject which was published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

After a year of working corporate dentistry, Dr. Barrett founded Barrett Family Dental in 2013. Having been raised by two hygienists, Dr. Barrett has shaped his dental philosophy around preventative care and whole-body health. He believes that a healthy mouth is a critical component of a healthy body and lifestyle and has tailor his practice to help his patients achieve that goal.

Understanding that health care is an ever-evolving field, Dr. Barrett is committed to lifelong learning and enjoys furthering his education. To that end, he has spent countless hours in continuing education courses to ensure that his patients always receive the best care. As a result of years of additional education, in 2021 Dr. Barrett was one of only five dentists in the State of Oregon to earn the distinction Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. This honor requires 500 hours of continuing education and the passing of a comprehensive exam. Approximately only 6% of dentists nationwide are Fellows.

When not in the office, Dr. Barrett loves spending time with his wife Rebecca, a local high school teacher, and his two sons Owen and Oliver. You can often find them on weekends exploring the many wonders of the Pacific Northwest.
